The final slide shows a diagram of the participation of phagocytosis and an inflammatory response in the formation of foam cells. In the blood, LDL undergoes multiple atherogenic modifications. Modified lipoprotein particles form self-associates. LDL associates stimulate phagocytosis of subedothelialarterial cells. As a result of phagocytosis stimulation, a pro-inflammatory response in the form of pro-inflammatory cytokine secretion is triggered. Pro-inflammatory cytokines promote or even cause the accumulation of intracellular lipids, which leads to the formation of foam cells.
