On en face preparation parallele to inner surfase of aorta completely different picture takes place. On such a preparatrions we fond cellular polymirphism. In subendothelilal intima there are cells of different shapes: round, elongated, stellate. Using lipophylic dye we can stain lipids in subendothelial cells to reveal cellular lipidosis that is intracellular lipid accumulation. Foam cell formation is the most pronounsed manifestation of cellular lipidosis. Here you can see two cells with cytiplasm completely  filled with lipid droplets. Both cells are macrophages.
