As samples for the study, we used native LDL, multiple modified LDL isolated from the blood of atherosclerotic patients, and LDL modified in vitro in various ways. In addition, we used latex beads as a stimulator of macrophage phagocytoticactivity. Earlier, we showed that any type of LDL modification causes a tendency to self-association of lipoprotein particles. The sizes of the associates do not allow them to interact with a specific LDL receptor. As a result, associates are taken up by nonspecific phagocytosis bypassing the LDL receptor. It was interesting to establish whether there are common mechanisms in the interaction of macrophages with associates of modified LDL and non-lipid latex particles of a similar size.
